Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has voiced his concerns about the demanding football schedule, stating that it has “crossed the limits of what players can handle.” As domestic competitions resume following an international break, United faces a challenging period with three away games in just six days. The upcoming fixtures include Everton on Sunday, a Champions League clash with Galatasaray on Wednesday, and a match against Newcastle the following Saturday.
Ten Hag expressed solidarity with fellow managers, highlighting the widespread discontent with the current schedule. Thomas Tuchel of Bayern Munich had recently remarked that “the calendar is at the absolute limit, if not over it.” Despite the complaints, the schedule continues to expand, with two more group games added for teams in the 2024-25 Champions League. Ten Hag emphasized that the limits of players’ endurance have already been surpassed and criticized the ongoing trend of adding more games to an already packed schedule.
Physical Toll on Players and Managerial Strategies
The United manager delved into the impact of the congested schedule on player performance. He noted that the physical standards in the first 12 Premier League games of the season have risen compared to the previous year. Ten Hag explained that teams face a choice: either match the heightened physical demands through rigorous training and preparation or risk a drop in performance. According to him, smart decision-making is crucial, and teams must be willing to endure and sacrifice to meet the standards set by their opponents.
Ten Hag acknowledged the upcoming European Championship in Germany next summer, merely 18 months after the World Cup in Qatar. With three international breaks already in the current season, he emphasized the need for teams to strategically manage their players’ physical levels to stay competitive. The manager stressed that these standards are not set by individual teams but by the level of competition in football.
Financial Fair Play and Squad Building Challenges
In response to questions about financial fair play (FFP) rules, Ten Hag discussed the impact of such regulations on squad building. The discussion arose in the context of Everton’s recent deduction of 10 points for breaching financial rules. Manchester City also faced scrutiny earlier in the year for 115 rule breaches. Ten Hag emphasized that FFP rules impose limitations on clubs, requiring them to construct squads while adhering to financial constraints.
Despite Manchester United’s significant summer spending of £170m on players like Andre Onana, Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, and Altay Bayindir, Ten Hag highlighted the challenges imposed by FFP regulations. He stressed the need for all clubs to adhere to these rules to maintain fairness within the competitive landscape.
