VAR and English referees have struck again! Yet again failing Manchester United this season. In the 9th minute against Fulham, from a free kick, Garnacho squared the ball across goal for a Mctominay tap in. VAR then interevend claiming that Harry Maguire got involved however still without making an actual decision, Australian referee Jarred Gillett who was the VAR, continued his long streak of poor decisions, by referring it back to the referee on field.
This saw one of the first “subjective offsides” in the Premier League, confusing many fans alike who were all questioning why an offside required the referee to view the video and make an on field call. None the less, this offside call took the English referees a total of 3 minutes and 30 seconds further opening them up to criticism from fans and pundits alike.
The decision has continued further impacts to Manchester United’s season, as they are having a terrible campaign with manager Erik Ten Hag under pressure due to poor results and displays. For VAR and under fire boss, Howard Webb, they will no doubt come out again and defend the decision whilst refusing to acknowledge the three minute thirty second delay it caused for both teams.
To further add to more VAR controversy, Mikel Arteta came out and claimed that it was a disgrace after VAR failed to overturn Anthony Gordon’s goal despite the ball clearly going out of play.
No doubt, fans are becoming more and more frustrated as Howard Webb and the PGMOL have managed to cause so much drama so early into the Premier League season.
