Olympique Lyonnais supporters face consequences following racist gestures directed at Olympique de Marseille fans during the Choc des Olympiques on October 29th. The disturbing incidents unfolded both on and off the field, with Lyon fans being attacked en route to the Vélodrome. Despite this, their actions inside the stadium, including racist chants and gestures captured on CCTV, prompted authorities to take action.
The Marseille Public Prosecutor has charged three supporters, aged 27, 33, and 34, with offenses such as “racist insults based on ethnicity, nationality, race, or religion” and “public provocation to hate or violence.” Notably, the accused individuals, two of whom have ties to the fascist Mezza fan group, were identified through the surveillance footage. The charges also include bringing symbols that incite hatred into a sports stadium.
Lyon’s сollective punishment mitigated by proactive measures
In response to the reprehensible behavior of its supporters, Olympique Lyonnais has been collectively penalized by the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s (LFP) disciplinary committee. The club will face a four-match away stadium ban, with three of those matches under suspension. A noteworthy aspect that played a role in mitigating the severity of the punishment was Lyon’s proactive cooperation in providing evidence that facilitated the identification and prosecution of the individuals involved.
Lyon’s commitment to addressing the issue internally and assisting authorities in bringing the perpetrators to justice has been acknowledged.
